There are many grounds to connect a computer to another computer. The main reason to do so is to share resources. Access to files and the ability to play games with others at your same location was motivation for people back when the Internet was getting started. A computer connected to another computer was the first networks that we as common users saw before the breakthroughs in technology that we have now.
1. You will need to set up connections and change some settings to get the whole process completed. You will need an Ethernet crossover cable. This cable allows certain wires to be flipped inside the cable to allow for one computer’s “talk” cable to connect to the other computers “listen” port and vice versa. Connect each end of the cable to Ethernet opening on the back of the computer. This would be the same connection that you use when you connect to the Internet for most common computers.
2. You need to set up a new network connection on each PC. For Windows XP click on start then settings and then network connections. There should be a connection referred to as LAN or Local Area Network; it will say connected because you already have the cable in place between the two computers. Right click the icon and select properties, a different window will appear.
3. Select “Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)” and click the properties button. This gives you another screen. The option to use the IP address you assign is checked by default. Enter the IP address 192.168.1.1 for the first computer and use 192.168.1.2 for the second computer. In the next box down enter 255.255.255.0 for the subnet mask and click OK.
4. On your desktop right click “My Computer” and select properties in the drop down. The system properties box will pop open. Select the “computer name” tab. There is a “change” button towards the bottom. Click it and a new window called computer name changes will pop up. Enter a computer name and then check the box for workgroup and enter a name. On both computers the workgroup name will be the same but the computer name will not be. You must reboot the computers once these settings are saved.
5. This will then create the ability to share resources. For individual files, right click the folder and select properties. Click the sharing tab and check the share this folder box. You can name it and even leave a comment. Click the apply button.
6. To get to the folder from the other computer select start then network then click on the name of your workgroup. The name of the other computer should be there. Double click it and you will see everything on the other computer that you now have access to.

CPU resources sometimes get very high when running multiple applications and doing CPU intensive processes. This How To will help you manage your PC so that CPU resources are available when needed.
1. We first start by looking at what applications start up on your system by default. Click on "Start" -> "Programs" -> "Startup". Take a look at all the programs in "Startup". If you notice some applications you don’t use often, you can move them to a new folder to take them out of the startup process.
2. To create a new folder, Click on "Start". Bring the mouse pointer to "Programs" and right-click on it. Choose "Explore". A window will open up. In the right pane that lists "Accessories", "Startup", and other misc folders, right-click on the white area of the pane and choose "New" -> "Folder". You can then name your folder "Old Startup". Having this folder allows you to restore any needed "Startup" items at a later time.
3. Now all you have to do is drag and drop items from "Startup" to "Old Startup". This can be done by clicking on "Start" -> "Programs" -> "Startup". Hold down the left mouse button on the item you want to move and drag it to the "Old Startup" folder.
4. Another way to look at your computing resources is to also look at what processes are currently running. This can be achieved by looking at "Task Manager". Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete and click on the "Task Manager" button. Click on the "Processes" tab, click on "CPU" column till you see high numbers. This chart will show you which processes are consuming the most CPU. Some are standard programs and some are not. Since there are many applications that can be running on anyone’s system, it would be best to do a web search on how important that application is to be running. Maybe its an old application for your old cellular phone you don’t need anymore or an old app that you used with an old scanner. Some of these processes can be lowered in priority by right-clicking -> choose "Set Priority" -> choose "BelowNormal" or "Low"

Spyware is malicious software which obtains a computer user’s information without the knowledge or consent of that user. Adware, on the other hand, is contained in certain software programs which display advertisements on your computer, typically while the software is open and running. Both spyware and adware can disturb the functionality of your PC. Since spyware can invade your personal information, and adware can be a nuisance, it’s important to know how to protect your computer from spyware and adware. Fortunately, there are many simple, preventative measures which will keep your PC safe. There are a number of programs that have been designed to cleanse your computer of these pests. Read on to learn more about how to protect your computer from spyware and adware.
1. Download an antivirus program, such as McAfee Antivirus or Norton Antivirus. These programs, once installed, will cleanse your computer of any potential threats. Make sure to run a full scan on your computer to detect any spyware or adware. Run these programs at least once a week to make sure your PC is clean.
2. Make sure any program you download is safe. This is maybe the best way to protect your computer from spyware and adware. Read the EULA (End User License Agreement) to know whether or not this software is actually spyware (i.e. will watch your computer activity) or contains adware.
3. Don’t approve any website to have access to your PC unless you are sure it’s safe. When you click a link on some websites, a dialogue box will appear, asking you to verify whether or not a program or device is permitted to access your computer or network. Read these messages carefully and don’t permit access, unless it’s a trusted website.
4. Download a program specifically designed to cleanse your computer of spyware and adware. One of the most popular programs is Adaware. Like step #2, this is a great way to protect your computer from spyware and adware. Scan your computer every week.
